Looking for some wild birds next year.

Starting to think about trying to get on some wild birds next year.  I am trying to stay close to home, but wonder if the Dakotas are my only real other option.  I might try there unless I can locate someplace closer to hunt.  If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

  1. Hi Bryan, I think for wild birds (non waterfowl that is) close I would go for ruffed grouse and woodcock in Northern Wisconsin or Minn. Although it's not that close it's certainly closer than SD for pheasant. It's different hunting than pheasant but there are a lot of similarities. Grouse flush easier and don't run as much but woodcock will hold very nice for a pointing dog, probably better than any other game bird. The only problem, the woods you are hunting and shooting in but that's what makes the challenge exciting to me. Grouse move twice as fast and with the brush it's 5 times harder to have success.

Southern Wisconsin offers public pheasant hunting that is pretty decent. Although the birds are not wild (well some probably survive) the challenge is decent since you'll need to put some miles on to find them, especially late season. I've also been across a few coveys of quail up there.

After the numbers you put under your dogs this season that will be hard to top! Great hunting.

    1. I have wanted to get on grouse and was thinking I might be able to get some in central wi. I just need to find some land to hunt them. I have access to a house in the dells I can stay at so that is the general area I want to hunt. Know of any places within an hour of there?

  2. I don't know of any in that area, I hunt in Sawyer county which is quite a bit further up. The further north you go the more birds you'll see. Price county is also a great area. I hunt all public land, there is plenty of it in the north.

  3. And to top it all off I am guiding a hunt on Saturday and Coon Creek extended the season until April 11th. The fields are holding up good and they still have birds. Might be able to get one more hunt in, I will have to see if I can.
